This March issue of Bakersfield Life offers a deep dive into a unifying theme: paving the way for others. As my colleagues worked to report, write and assemble the photos this month, it became clear that our work to celebrate the contributions of women during Women's History Month and to highlight the inspiring work of nonprofit organizations all came down to people paving the way for others.

With prayers for a day of no more tears, no more pain, no more cancer, hundreds gathered Feb. 13, timed to Valentine's Day, to hear the inspirational stories of breast cancer survivors and their steadfast caregivers at the Links for Life Love Links Luncheon. Buck Owens' Crystal Palace was filled with a sea of pink — along with a generous dose of hope.

At one end of the hospital, students carefully handled their patients as medication entered their bodies. They shaved their bellies. In the operating room, they observed intensely, listened carefully and assisted the surgeon. Throughout the process, they were attentive to TPR — temperature, pulse and respiration. But this was no ordinary hospital where high school students soaked up knowledge and skills to launch them into a career in veterinary care.
