    Area basketball coaching legend Bill Nienstedt was recently hired as the new head coach of the Emporia High School girls basketball program. The USD 253 school board approved the hire last Wednesday. This is Nienstedt’s second go-around at Emporia. He coached the Lady Spartans from 2001 to 2013, where his teams competed in the state tournament five times. Nienstedt takes over for the departed Taylor Scott who coached the Lady Spartans for one season.

    “Former” Lebo High School standout athlete Drew Konrade is still repping the Wolves. He will be playing in the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches All-Star Game in Wichita June 18. Konrade was selected as a KABC First-Team 1A/2A outfielder. “This is the first time in program history a Wolfdog player has been selected first-team and invited to play in the all-star game,” said Lebo-Waverly coach Jason Konrade.

    Several local high school track and field athletes will convene in Wichita this Friday and Saturday to run, throw and jump in the KSHSAA State Track and Field Championships.     Emporia High School’s baseball season came to an end Wednesday afternoon, after Kapaun Mt. Carmel held on to win the 5A Regional #1 first-round contest, 4-3. The Spartans finished the year at 14-11. It was a close game in its entirety, but Emporia just couldn’t pull the trigger enough times to scoop out a victory.
