After a lengthy break due to the 34th Africa Cup of Nations and the Super Eagles soar in the competition, the NPFL24 season will return to action this weekend. The mid-season break saw the completion of all outstanding matches involving majorly Rivers United and a well-aligned table for the season. This, in turn, makes the second half of the season tantalizing as teams now know their fate and how they turn them at the end of the season.

24 long years! The very last time a Nigerian player emerged as the CAF Player of the Year. Kanu Nwankwo was that man. It has been down the slope of nominations since then. Austin Okocha who came close twice in 2003 and 2004 but finished third position on both occasions and John Obi Mikel who finished second in 2013 are the only other Nigerians to have been nominated for Africa’s most prestigious individual football award.

Rivalry never ends. And this is why the Israel-Hamas war has spilled up again. Israel and Palestine have been at war over land ownership for decades. The battle for pride, revenge and territorial dominance between both nations show rivalry never truly ends. Last week, a video trended on X where Nigeria’s former Head of State, Yakubu Gown reacted to being overthrown in 1975. Gowon had been in an Organisation of African Unity meeting with other African leaders when he got the news. Gowon was calm, composed and even wore a big smile even though he had lost his job as the country’s number 1 citizen and when the press tried pushing to get a confirmation from him on the overthrowing, he replied with a big smile “no comments.” .

And the champions of the NPFL are Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan!!!!!!!!! This is a statement that would throw the whole of Oyo state into celebrations, more like there will be festivals, carnivals on the streets of Ibadan if those words are said by any commentator after an NPFL game. But unfortunately, the last time the people of Ibadan heard such a statement was in 1998; 25 years ago.
