Back pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide, incurable and very difficult to treat. It costs the US economy over $90 billion annually and that of the UK £11 billion. Most back pain is caused by degeneration in one or more of the intervertebral discs (IVDs) that act as shock absorbers between vertebrae. Each disc comprises a cartilaginous, central nucleus pulposus that resists compression surrounded by a collagenous annulus fibrosus that resists shear and tensile stress.

Amur honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii) and the other exotic bush honeysuckle species tend to leaf out earlier in the spring than native shrubs, and the plants stay green longer.
