INTRODUCTION Pain is one of the most common and burdensome symptoms associated with cancer,1, 2 affecting up to three of four people with cancer and adversely affecting their quality of life.3, 4 Causes of cancer pain are complex and varied but typically arise from a verifiable lesion that produces pain through direct tissue injury, metastatic disease, and/or cancer-related inflammatory processes.5 In some cases, it may also arise from cancer treatment(s).

Work on the Standard began in 2020 with a comprehensive review of international and local guidelines.
