I have always loved the concept of What If…? It’s a tradition that goes back decades for Marvel Comics, and I never imagined having an animated show based on the series. Luckily, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been around for so long, created so many different characters, and carved out all these pockets of their universe that the What If…? concept has finally been viable for an anthology TV series. Some may dismiss it because the plots don’t affect the main continuity, but when a What If…?

After a short wait, the second and final installment of the Watchmen animated movies is here. Watchmen: Chapter I was released this past August, so there wasn’t even much of a wait for the conclusion. Chapter I covered the first five issues of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ 1986 graphic novel while Chapter II adapts the next seven. They could have easily called these “Part 1” and “Part 2” as the word “chapter” doesn’t correspond to anything specifically.

Previously – Despite gaining more public support than Lois Lane, Lex Luthor grew increasingly unhinged. He had been following the plan of his partner, Amanda McCoy, but all he wanted was revenge on Clark Kent and Lois Lane. With the help of his top scientist, Milton Fine, Luthor stole John Henry Irons’ Steel suit. Lois, believing she could turn Amanda against Luthor, told her about the unfortunate story of a previous partner/girlfriend of Luthor’s.

Previously – Taking the advice of his associate, Amanda McCoy, Lex Luthor cleans up and appears on Gordon Godfrey’s show to repair his reputation. He challenges Lois Lane to a debate at a later airing of the show. The debate gets heated, but it ends abruptly when Clark has to become quickly Superman and fight an out of control Steel armor. Superman saves John Henry Irons, but his armor falls into the hands of Luthor’s top brain, Milton Fine.

Previously – Last season, Lana Lang’s ex-husband, Kyle Cushing, began a relationship with Lois Lane’s co-worker, Chrissy Beppo. Upon finding out that she’s pregnant, Kyle proposed to her. More recently, Jordan learned from Lex Luthor that in a split-second decision between her boys, Lois chose to save Jonathan over Jordan. Jonathan’s Kryptonian powers emerged, and Steel and Starlight unsuccessfully tried to stop Doomsday.

DC took its chance on doing a Joker origin movie without Batman in 2019. It was so successful that it got a sequel, but there was an added surprise. The sequel was to be a musical. So with singer Lady Gaga joining the cast as Harley Quinn, Joker: Folie à Deux sees Batman’s arch enemy singing and dancing in a movie. As weird as that sounds, there’s been a lot of precedence for the Joker belting out a tune. The Joker is, in fact, one of the most musically inclined super villains out there.

Previously – Lex Luthor has taken up shop in a hotel in Smallville. Lois Lane’s story sent him to prison for 15 years, which ruined his relationship with his daughter. His efforts to bury Lois’ father, Sam Lane, alive was thwarted, but he was able to successfully use Doomsday to kill Superman. Doomsday ripped out Superman’s heart and delivered it to Luthor while Lois, Jordan, and Jonathan were left with the body.

Last Season on Superman & Lois – After the revelation that Lois Lane’s evidence that had put Lex Luthor behind bars 15 years ago was, in fact, fake, Luthor was released from prison. He demanded Lois retire from reporting, and when she refused, he retaliated. He hired a woman to catfish and then capture Lois’ father, General Sam Lane. He then got his hands on Bizarro, a Superman from another world. Inflicting every kind of damage to him imaginable, Luthor created this show’s version of Doomsday.

Superman, Batman, and their Justice League teammates have been such a permanent fixture in pop culture that their presence has expanded beyond the pages of comic books. While animation may have had the easiest time of translating characters from page to screen, that hasn’t stopped live action works from adapting DC’s greatest heroes. These serials, TV shows, and movies mostly went in their own direction, both for budgetary reasons and the sake of mass appeal.
