Several years ago, I was in a Hawaiian beach-themed bar, located in a tower block in Japan. I met two garrulous Australian surfers who, after finding out that I was born in Durban, regaled me with tales of their own adventures on surf trips across Asia. I listened to these stories with rapt fascination. There was the beauty of the roaring waves, the endless sky stretching towards the horizon, and the visceral spirituality of surfing itself.
