Six months gone already, six more to go. In Ludology Now!’s 2024 Game of the Year Awards I mentioned that I always felt recency bias, even if you are trying to avoid it, makes comparing a game from January to a game from December of the same year difficult. This year, let’s try something different. Much like previous ceremonies, the only qualifications for Ludology Now!’s 2025 Games of the Mid-Year Awards is that I have to have actually played the game.

Last week, IGN published an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto advertising the Super Nintendo World theme park in Orlando, FL. NOTE: This will be the last Microsoft-owned game covered by Ludology Now! moving forward unless significant things change. Microsoft has continued to support Israel in their Palestinian genocide and I cannot in good conscious ignore that. There are thousands of companies and independent developers creating games without these ethical issues attached, and those all deserve to be spotlighted much more.

Recently, I decided to teach myself how to pick locks. It’s something I’ve only sporadically enjoyed in video games, but a skill that fascinates me in real life. Thinking back, there were multiple situations when knowing how to pick a lock would have saved me time, money, and stress. There was the time my (locked) car keys fell out of my shirt pocket right as I was shutting the trunk lid – right after arriving at a Christmas party with an ex-girlfriend’s family.
