Raw milk has made headlines recently for widespread samples containing the virus that causes H5N1, or bird flu, with the U.S. Department of Agriculture launching a program in December to track the virus through milk testing. But bird flu is far from the only disease-causing pathogen lurking in raw milk: Unpasteurized milk can contain bacteria such as E. coli and Listeria, for instance.

"There was an urgency to find answers," said the Stanford Medicine clinical associate professor of hematology. It turned out that the man's condition was new to medicine; it had been pinpointed in others only a year earlier by a doctor at the Mayo Clinic.

I’m reminded of why I wrote a memoir every time I twist my left fingers entering em-dashes, double quote marks, and parentheses on my MacBook. I’m also reminded why the manuscript took almost eight years to finish. I type with only my left hand since I have cerebral palsy of the right side. Stiff right fingers won’t cooperate with my keyboard as they’re usually curled into my palm.

For me, the breaking point came during a single two-week period in June 2021. First, it was the red-light runner. Hauling my young twins on the back of my family’s cargo bike, I waited to cross Lyndale Avenue in the South Uptown area. The light changed; I was poised to enter the intersection, when a car traveling northbound blew not only through their red light but through our green light. A near miss. Within a few days of that, it was the left-turning car.
