In 2008, Michael Cruse was tasting his way through Northern California during the windows of free time his day job allowed. Cruse was working as a winemaker at Merryvale, where he’d spent seven years, mostly focused on the company’s Pinot Noir and Chardonnay-based Starmont brand. This was a particularly exciting moment for Northern California wine, and Pinot Noir in particular, as variety and experimentation were everywhere.

Early on in Uncorked, a 2017 reality TV miniseries that follows a group of sommeliers through the trials of preparing for the Master Sommelier exams, two of the somms head to a sleek New York wine bar for a much-needed break. Presented with the menu, they quickly hone in on a wine over which they laugh and pound the table with delight: a well-aged German Riesling. To many of the world’s top sommeliers and retailers, this scene makes perfect sense.

Madrid is having a bit of a renaissance. Perhaps, as some locals believe, it’s because the city opened back up to tourism in the wake of the pandemic far sooner than Barcelona or Granada. Or maybe it’s simply because, in the course of 1,100 years of history, every city is bound to have a few moments in the sun.
