Corn and soybeans are the primary focus of spring planting in Muskingum County. In 1950, Muskingum County had approximately 26,000 acres in corn, but today it's just a little more than the 24,000 acres. For the last month and a half, tractors have been pulling fertilizer carts, tillage equipment and planters on our roads and in the fields as planting season begins. Corn and soybeans are the primary focus of spring planting in Muskingum County.

Recently, we have observed large numbers of white-flowered, cone-shaped trees dotting Ohio’s landscape. These attractive, cone shaped trees can be seen on hillsides, along village and city streets, on rural roads and even in parks where they have been purposely planted to enhance the areas. In recent years, these trees can be seen almost everywhere we travel and, although they are attractive to look at, they are taking over the rural landscapes.

The D.C. area is bracing for a line of severe storms Wednesday to bring blinding rain, powerful wind gusts, lightning, hail and the risk for an isolated tornado. The latest forecast models consistently show a dangerous line of storms reaching the D.C. area between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., Storm Team4 Meteorologist Chuck Bell said. The Storm Prediction Center said D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia are at a "slight risk" area for severe storms on Wednesday.

Of the almost 1,000 dairy farms once located in the area, fewer than 20 remain today. Where have all the dairies gone? I began to wonder if this might not be the situation with the dairy industry here in Muskingum County.
