Predicting the future with data: Educated predictions help safety programs

Those in the safety field have been exposed to tons of data over the years. It has typically been used to measure safety performance. We typically referred to that data as “accident statistics/rates” when leadership asks for proof that these programs make organizations safe. There have even been times when these numbers were used as incentives to secure a raise or bonus for ourselves, crews or those we report to. Unfortunately, that can lead to what I refer to as “pencil whipping” the numbers.

The potential for electrical shock increases with the various exposures we face, whether from a cluttered work area, the pace of work or the weather.

Why are voters so negative about President Biden’s economic and foreign policy successes, which have been substantial for just a short amount of time? In his recent Asheville Citizen Times column, “America must shake isolationist thinking,” Rev. Robert L. Montgomery gave excellent examples of our nation’s beneficial role in promoting international trade and security. He accurately criticized the former President Trump and the MAGA movement’s “America First” isolationist thinking and actions. American security has relied on alliances and security commitments we made with other countries in the past. But that’s only half of the story.

Since Democrats control the executive and senate branches of government, it makes it easier for Republicans to blame them for our nation’s problems. The U.S. economy is now the best among other developed nations. They need to do that, but it’s not nearly enough.

Donald Trump got voter support in 2016 because he successfully blamed President Clinton and the Democratic Party for the North American Free Trade Agreement. President Clinton had decided he needed to compromise with congressional Republicans if he were to get their cooperation. The most disastrous concession he made was to abandon his party’s opposition to unregulated free trade and get NAFTA, a Republican legislation, ratified by Congress.
