Whenever Armada’s baseball team needed something from Adam Sauer, he was there to deliver. Sauer moved from second base to the mound to tame Richmond’s booming bats in the second inning, then hit a walk-off single in the seventh to lift the Tigers to a 10-9 victory in the Blue Water Area Conference baseball game. He also drove in Armada’s first run with a sacrifice fly. The winning rally started with Lucas Pratt’s two-out single to right.

The thermometer read 37 degrees at the end of Armada’s 10-6 softball victory against L’Anse Creuse North Tuesday, but the 1-2 punch at the top of the Tigers’ lineup was hotter than a day in mid-July. Freshman center fielder Lily Piconke, making her varsity debut, and sophomore third baseman Laney Fettue combined for eight hits. Three of Piconke’s four hits were doubles. Fettue had a pair of doubles and drove in four runs. “Both are really good ballplayers,” said Armada coach Rob Girvin.

The all-around brilliance of senior Sara Wilking and the scoring of freshman Emerson Holder and junior Samantha Thomas carried the Saddlelites to a 71-18 victory against Fitzgerald Tuesday in a non-league game. “Sara’s having a great senior year,” said coach Joe Charrette. “She rebounds. She directs traffic. She saves me a couple timeouts a game because she gets the young kids organized.

New Haven’s defense appears to be ready for the state basketball tournament when it starts in a few weeks. “Tonight we played good defense,” Rockets coach Tedaro France II said Monday after New Haven defeated Mount Clemens 78-29 in a non-league game. We’ve been real good at times and real bad at times. We’re trying to find consistency. The offense will come but we can never have an off-day defensively. We have to be accountable for our actions each day on the defensive end.
