Mutants in Sons of the Forest are more lethal than Cannibals, requiring high-power weapons like Explosives and Traps. Flaming Arrows, Shotgun, and Crossbow are effective weapons against specific Mutants like Fingers, Twins, and Puffys. Traps like Hokey Pokey, Explosive Tripwire, and Crosses can incapacitate Mutants and offer strategic advantages during gameplay. Out of all the enemies in Sons of the Forest, the various types of Mutants are by far the most deadly and volatile.

Cannibals are the main type of enemy in Sons of the Forest, alongside different types of mutants. There are six types of Cannibals — Regular, Dirty, Masked, Brute and Titan — that spawn as either male or female variations. All Cannibals have their own distinctive characteristics that make them difficult to deal with, but players can craft high-end weapons to fend them off easily. In the event of mutilation, Cannibals will try to flee.

Sofalite is used to upgrade weapons in Sons of the Forest, and players can begin enhancing their inventory as soon as they start mining it. They will need a Sofalite Upgrader to make modifications to weapons, which can be crafted using the blueprint found in a cave near the southwest golf course. The Sofalite Upgrader requires four Golf Cart Batteries, three Turtle Shells, seven Stones, 11 Sticks, and three Wires.
