When River Fleming's sight failed five years ago the future seemed bleak. However, now River is training to take part in next month's London Marathon, proving they mean to "live life to its fullest". River, who will race alongside an "amazing guide runner", struggled to come to terms with the life-changing impact of sight loss when aged just 16. Worried about a serious decline in the bee population, Bekah Grace has created a group called Bumble Buddies and is challenging people to join her and her friends' efforts to create a better habitat for wildlife by growing sunflowers.

Leicestershire's Great Central Railway (GCR) is to offer a tantalising glimpse of its long hoped-for 'reunification' with a section of the historic line in neighbouring Nottinghamshire. The service opened in 1899 and ran between Sheffield to London, passing through Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire before it closed under a nationwide programme of cuts in the 1960s.

A former Para and his young son are to sleep rough to highlight the plight of homeless people, including those who have served their country. Chris Boulter and 10-year-old George will face the Great Tommy Sleep-out challenge in Leicester to raise money for a national charity which helps veterans who are living in destitution. While most people are planning a one-night sleep-out, the pair have decided to "up the ante" and do two nights, Chris said.
