Speaking on RTÉ’s Today with Claire Byrne, he said Irish people pay “an awful lot in this country at the moment for entertainment” through their television licence, the RTÉ “bailout”, or for streaming services.

The Farrelly Commission was set up in 2017 to examine the case of a woman, given the pseudonym Grace, who has been in the care of the State all her life. It came after allegations of sexual abuse were raised against her foster father relating to another person who had lived with the family, and the length of time it took to remove Grace from the home thereafter. The Commission ultimately found Grace had been neglected and that there was a lack of oversight for her care.

Missing ordnance, which gardaí said may have contained explosive materia,l has been recovered following a public appeal. The appeal over the possible live Army round seen near a walking trail in Co Wicklow was issued on Tuesday. A white illumination round is about 12in (30cm) long and weighs nearly 7lb (3.1kg). It is used by the military to illuminate an area at night.
