For the month of April, local independent bookstores are participating in the second annual Houston Bookstore Crawl in connection with Indie Bookstore Day, Saturday, April 26th. Houston’s independent bookstore community has grown significantly in the last few years, and the Bookstore Crawl is a great way to check out some of these new stores as well as visiting longtime favorites.

2025 has been such an interesting year for books so far. There have been a number of good books coming out, but also more books than usual that have not resonated with me. As in previous years, I am keeping a running list of my favorites so that at the end of the year, it is easier to compile my “best of” list. Each quarter, one of my favorite bookstagrammers Kelly Hooker of @kellyhook.readsbooks joins me on my podcast for a discussion about our full list of top reads for that quarter.

A debate has existed for years over whether avid readers “have to” read the book before they watch the show. This continues to be a popular topic as more and more books are adapted for the screen. For me, it depends on the show and whether I feel the book would enhance my watching experience. One of the more popular adaptations is Tracker, which runs on CBS (you can also stream it on Paramount Plus, Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video, or Apple TV+).

Mystery series are so much fun to read because they provide the opportunity to see the various characters develop over time, both personally and professionally. When I start a new book in a series I love, I feel like I am reconnecting with old friends as well as enjoying the progression of the crime solving and the possibility of revisiting earlier crimes and events. There are so many wonderful mystery series, and it can be difficult to decide which one to begin.
