SEVIERVILLE — The Family and Community Education Volunteer Club held its Cultural Arts Competition on Tuesday, July 9, at King Family Library. "For this competition, there are many of our members that participate and turn in projects that they have created within the last year," said Kaysie Adkins, Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent I. The competition included a fashion revue with 14 categories and cultural arts competition of 54 categories. "We do it every year.

GATLINBURG — Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts has had scholarships for veterans to attend a woodworking workshop at the school for years, but a new partnership with Ole Smoky Distillery will open up more art disciplines to veterans. The distillery launched a new marketing campaign on Wednesday that supports scholarships for veterans to attend workshops in a variety of different art forms at Arrowmont.

SEVIERVILLE — Residents will soon have a chance to offer feedback on what the city and state should do regarding future road work on SR 416 (Pittman Center Road). The city and Tennessee Department of Transportation will hold a public information meeting to seek input on the SR 416 Corridor Study from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, at Walters State Community College's Sevierville campus.

GATLINBURG — The City held a meet-and-greet with Conner Smith, American Academy of County Music nominee for New Male Artist of the Year, at Ole Smoky Moonshine Holler on Wednesday. Smith made a brief stop, including a short concert at the Ole Smoky Moonshine Holler and meeting with fans, prior to his role as grand marshal at the 49th annual Gatlinburg Fourth of July Midnight Parade at midnight, making it the first Independence Day festivities to kick off the holiday.

SEVIERVILLE — The Apple Barn is soon to open its latest offering to customers who love their location — the new Apple Barn Hard Cider Company. The Apple Barn Cider Company is scheduled to open in July and has plans to process Tennessee apples on site for both fresh juice and hard cider. Samples will be offered for free. They also hope to have a line of sparkling juice as well, which is non-alcoholic.

PIGEON FORGE — The City Commission voted to use federal funding to tackle a much needed waterline project at their meeting on Monday. The city will be using State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds, which were given for projects to help the community after the COVID-19 pandemic, for a waterline extension on Henderson Springs. "We have to commit the funds for a project by December of this year. The funds have to be expended by Dec. 31, 2026," said Finance Director Dennis Clabo.

SEVIERVILLE — It's a special feeling to take a passion and make a real difference, and Frank Gioscia has found a way to do just that by participating in CureSearch for Children's Cancer Ultimate Hike events. The avid hiker has raised approximately $420,000 since he started hiking in the events in 2011. "This will be my 14th year. It is something I got started on and it's for a great cause.

GATLINBURG — City Commission learned more about a $5 million proposed water plant expansion that would increase capacity but be within the footprint of the existing plant. Utility Manager Dale Phelps said they worked with Richard Yarbrough of C2RL, who did some engineering analysis for the department and found they could increase capacity, lowering the city's dependency on Pigeon Forge, who they buy a large amount of water from.

GATLINBURG — The Gatlinburg City Commission is considering a new playground at Mynatt Park, new bleachers at a Mills Park field, improvements to the community center pool, updates at the Gatlinburg Golf Course, work on the new Mass Transit Center and a number of other projects for the 2024/2025 fiscal year.
