1 INTRODUCTION Tropical Pacific dynamics play a key role in the global climate. The South Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ) is the dominant climate feature that channels convective rainfall in the South Pacific at seasonal scale (Brown et al., 2020). At interannual scales (2–8 years), climate variability is controlled by the coupled ocean–atmosphere phenomenon El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) (Folland et al., 2002; Timmermann et al., 2018).
