Hundreds of excited competitors were raring to go on Tuesday morning as the inaugural Zespri AIMS Games orienteering event got underway. Orienteering has attracted about 300 entries in its first year, with most students competing in both the sprint event on Tuesday and the rogaining event on Wednesday.

    For a group of intermediate students from Tauranga, their performance at next week’s Zespri AIMS Games will be measured in tons, not medals. That’s because the environmental warriors – nicknamed the Green Team – have one of the most important tasks at the week-long tournament; diverting thousands of kilograms of waste from landfills. With nearly 13,000 athletes - more than the 10,500 hosted at the Paris Olympics - set to descend on Tauranga from Saturday, it will be no small feat.

Provisional water safety data and ACC figures have been released to the Bay of Plenty Times. A total of 90 people drowned across New Zealand in 2023, including six due to Cyclone Gabrielle, provisional Water Safety NZ figures show.
