Morris Garages (MG) was founded in 1924, in what must have been, I imagine, a decidedly damp garage somewhere in Britain, while it probably rained outside relentlessly. Driven by the desire to rather spend time indoors, Cecil Kimber began building cars in earnest. And so, MG was born. Up until the early 2000s, it achieved moderate success both in the UK and some other markets with various not-too-terrible runabouts, as well as cheap ‘n’ cheerful sportscars and roadsters.

Renault’s hot hatch arm, Renault Sport will cease to exist as the brand enters an electric future. From the early 2000s, Renault Sport upped the hot hatch game with some incredible specimens that often wiped the floor with the competition in the front-wheel-drive handling stakes. As the game moved on, so the hot hatch goalposts moved with it and AWD super hatches from Merc, VW and BMW became the hot ticket items that ruled the hatchback world.

The Mercedes Benz SL is an iconic nameplate. It’s been with gracing roads around the world since the Gullwing 300 SL, examples of which now cost more than Australia. Sure, over the years, there have always been hardcore versions of the SL, and we fondly remember the SL55 and SL63 AMGs. There was even the highly memorable SL Black Series. But for this new 2023 generation of SL, there will be no softcore SL500 version, at least as far as we know.
