Background: Staging laparoscopy is a standard procedure to stratify patients with newly diagnosed gastric cancer and to guide the treatment for these patients. The aim of this work was to study the value of the staging laparoscopy with peritoneal cytology in patients with gastric cancer in our institution, and to find if this tool changes the therapeutic approach to these patients.

Background: In Portugal, it is mandatory to perform at least 6 gastrectomies during general surgery residency, within a wide list of procedures. Being aware of the high complexity of this surgical intervention, it is expected that residents find several obstacles along their training: from the low surgical opportunity, to the lack of standardized and progressive exposure.
