I last read and reviewed one of her books of fiction, The Last Neanderthal in 2019 and I recently picked up her memoir How to Survive a Bear Attack with an open mind because it's a work of non-fiction, so very different from what I was used to. This latest book is about the skin cancer that runs in her family, plus a deadly bear attack she became fixated on as she grew older.

A Japanese startup is set to launch a lunar lander this week — its second attempt to land on the Moon after a first try failed in 2023. Ispace’s Resilience lander lifts off Wednesday as part of a NASA program to develop commercial services for doing work on the Moon. If all goes to plan, the spacecraft will touch down in a few months, making Ispace the first Asian company to land on the Moon. So far, just one private firm has done so — Intuitive Machines, a US startup, in February 2024.

Scientists found liquid water — and, surprisingly, life — at the bottom of a frozen Antarctic lake. The splendidly named Lake Enigma has an average temperature of -14°Celsius (6.8°Fahrenheit), and scientists had long assumed it was completely frozen all the way down. But in 2019, researchers discovered a 40-foot basin of liquid water beneath a thick layer of ice.
