“Like the neorealists before her, Payal Kapadia is an urban film poet. In Sight and Sound in 1950, chafing against the neorealist tag, Vittorio De Sica argued that his real goal in films such as Bicycle Thieves (1948) was not simply to capture reality but to “transpose [it] into the poetical plane”. He did not see any future in neorealism unless it “surmounted the barrier separating the documentary from drama and poetry”.

Claire Denis (1948) is a French filmmaker and one of the major artistic voices of contemporary French cinema. After studying economics, Claire Denis enrolled in the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (now École nationale supérieure des métiers de l’image et du son), graduating in 1971. She started out as an assistant director to Dušan Makavejev, Costa Gavras, Jacques Rivette, Jim Jarmusch, and Wim Wenders.

The Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival on Monday announced its line-up for the year 2023, with over 250 films spread over 10 days. The festival will be held at the Jio World Centre, a convention, theatre and concert hall complex in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. It will run from October 27 to November 5. The curation boasts over 40 World Premieres, 45 Asia Premieres, and 70 South Asia Premieres, with a record-breaking number of 1000 submissions for the South Asia programme.
