Monday, January 6, Black River Technical College (BRTC) held a legislative panel session for its employees. This session gave employees the opportunity to talk to their legislators about concerns surrounding the future of education in Arkansas. The attending legislators were Senator Blake Johnson, Representative Trey Steimel, Representative Fran Cavenaugh, and Representative Jeremy Woolridge. Each legislator represents a county or counties that BRTC serves.

The 2024 Black River Technical College (BRTC) trap team has made college history by taking 1st Place Team in Conference 2 of the USA Clay Target College League. This championship award is a great triumph for the team. It follows the 2023 Fall season where Sara Roland won 1st place Jr. Varsity Female and the team took 7th place in the conference. “Since starting our trap team during the 2021-2022 year our team members have received several individual accolades and awards,” said Coach Dane Dillion.

Black River Technical College’s (BRTC) Registered Nursing (RN) pinning ceremony was a family affair for a mother-daughter duo. Michelle Knight, mother, and Kandra Knight, daughter, graduated together as members of the RN Fall 2024 class. Kandra said they had it all planned out from the beginning. Kandra said she remembered her mother talking about wanting to be a nurse, but circumstances kept her from getting to follow through with her dreams.

Black River Technical College (BRTC) Academic Advisor and ADA Coordinator Dr. Zachary Singleton has been spreading a little happiness to patients at Minnesota Children’s Hospital. Earlier this year Singleton and his brother sold their late father’s house. After the funds were split and Singleton received his portion he decided to put some of the money towards brightening someone else’s day. He did his research and found an organization called Gamers Outreach.

Technical jobs are becoming widely available in Northeast Arkansas. Hospitals are needing nurses, factories are needing technicians, and tech companies are needing programmers. While some businesses will go on the hunt for employees, others will look towards a local community college. Black River Technical College (BRTC) is becoming the two-year college that students from Northeast Arkansas and Southeast Missouri are putting at the top of their lists.

Black River Technical College (BRTC) had six members of the trap team compete in the City of Jacksonville Benefit Shoot in Jacksonville, Arkansas. Over 30 teams competed in the shoot and the BRTC trap team won 1st place overall in the team division. Members of the winning team include Hayden Barlow, Larry Burrow, David Ladd, Connor Tuttle, Luke Hiser, and Ava Newton. The team was coached by Dane Dillion, director of student development.

On November 13, Black River Technical College (BRTC) held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Law Enforcement Training Academy (LETA) barracks. Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders was the keynote speaker for the ceremony. During her speech she showed her deep appreciation for Arkansas law enforcement, and commended BRTC’s Law Enforcement Training Academy for all of their hard work and their contribution to the law enforcement community in Arkansas.
