Deepwater drilling is becoming increasing important in the oil and gas (O&G) industry as shallower reserves are depleted. According to Global Energy Monitor’s Global Oil and Gas Extraction Tracker, in 2024, resources totalling approximately eight billion barrels of oil equivalent were announced in new offshore discoveries. Moving into deepwater environments is generally harder than onshore O&G extraction thanks to a combination of technical, economic and environmental factors.

The Reko Diq gold and copper mine in Pakistan has reached levels of progress as yet unseen in the project’s decades long history. On 8 April, the mine’s updated feasibility study and conditional related phase one development capital was approved. Following this breakthrough, Reko Diq project manager Tim Cribb spoke to Mining Technology from the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum (PMIF) about the next steps for the mine.

Remote mines are becoming increasingly exposed to extreme temperatures and weather patterns. Climate change is at the root of this issue, with a report from the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reductionrevealing that the number and severity of climate-related extreme weather events has risen by 83% from 1980–1999 to 2000–2019. In 2025 and beyond, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO)predicts an escalation in major floods, droughts and wildfires.
