    The family of Robert Pether, who has been in jail in Iraq for over four years are “hopeful” that he may be released on humanitarian grounds following a meeting between Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Harris and his Iraqi counterpart. Desree Pether, wife of Robert who lives in Elphin, told the Roscommon Herald she got a call from Simon Harris on today, Friday where he relayed to her that Robert’s plight had been discussed with the Iraqi official.

    Boyle Abbey Community College teacher Niall Flynn has completed a cycle from Malin to Mizen Head in just over half the time expected. The Malin to Mizen Head cycle which covers 917 kms normally takes nine days but Niall decided to increase the amount of kilometres he cycled each day and competed it in just five days which was a massive achievement. The Mohill native decided to take part in the charity event as part of his 6 Challenges in 6 Months fundraising effort.
