For the past few holiday seasons as I’ve driven all over town from here to there, I’ve noticed more and more immaculately illuminated houses that stand out from the rest. These homes are adorned with tasteful Christmas lights, hung perfectly along the entire perimeter of rooftops and even on the steepest of ridges. Strings of lights that do not sag, with bulbs that are spaced with exact symmetry. I can pick these professionally lit homes out from a block away.

Chief Red Cloud was a Lakota leader in the late 1800s, when the conflict between the US government and Native Americans was intense, and he was the tribal chief when the Catholic church built a boarding school on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. In the early 1990s, Justin Pourier was a maintenance man at Red Cloud Indian School, a Catholic school on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. One day, he says he stumbled upon small graves in the school’s basement. For nearly 30 years, Pourier would be haunted by what he saw and told no one except his wife. “Those are Native children down there…hopefully their spirit was able to travel on to whatever is beyond this world,” Pourier says.

Before I decided to pose this query to my Facebook friends, I had no idea just how impassioned people could become about cranberries and the various forms that they may take in the way of Thanksgiving dishes. What was meant to be a light-hearted, seasonally-inspired post elicited responses with every digital expression of emotion imaginable, from the gagging emoji to the one that is actually barfing, and all-caps comments ranging from “NO NEVER OMG EW,” to 11 red hearts in a row.

Why anyone likes to be scared on purpose is beyond me. This time of year, while many of you truly embrace “spooky season” with your haunted houses, horror movies, and terrifyingly realistic Freddy Krueger costumes, I am perfectly content to enjoy my happy little PG version of Halloween.
