    The Climate Change Committee’s 2024 Progress Report states that more than three-quarters of the required emissions reductions for the next three carbon budgets are expected to come from sectors (other than the energy sector) including buildings – contributions in these sectors “will need to accelerate fast”. It may be a truism that energy data is a critical building block for delivering improved energy efficiency in buildings.

    “Understanding net zero means you understand climate risk. There are no returns on a dead planet.(1)The net zero mission is deceptively simple. It can even be encapsulated in the ubiquitous three-word slogan: net zero 2050. But, as with any vision (and three-word slogan), it is meaningless if it is not underpinned by a decent strategy and real action. It certainly makes for some harrowing reading when delving into the topic of climate change and the possibility of achieving net zero.

    Landowners and occupiers are not expected be an “insurer of nature”[1], but to avoid criminal and civil liability they do need to manage the risks from the trees they are responsible for. And, importantly, no one wants to go home after a day’s work knowing that they could have taken steps to prevent a death or injury.
