Gregor Smith Born: July 15, 1944; Died: March 19, 2025 Gregor Smith, who has died aged 80, was an artist raised among the steelworks, pits, mines, and farms of Lanarkshire who focused much of his work on the dramatic coastline in the West of Scotland. Born in Renton, he studied drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art under Sir Robin Philipson and James Cumming from 1962 to 66. A postgraduate scholarship was followed by a travelling scholarship to Florence and Rome.

Kathryn Kynoch Born: August 18, 1941; Died: February 27, 2025 Kathryn Marie Tribe, née Kynoch, who has died aged 83, was a distinguished portrait painter known for painting many eminent Scots in a wide range of fields; her work can be found in many university collections. Born in Edinburgh, after attending grammar school in Leicester she returned to Scotland to study under David Donaldson and Geoff Squire at the Glasgow School of Art from 1959 until 64.

Adam Roe-Dwyer (25), of Johnfield Road, Dublin 8, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to one count of assault causing harm to a security officer at Centra, Dame Street, Dublin 2, on March 18, 2022. His co-accused, Ian Lynch (25), of Weaver Street, Dublin 18, pleaded guilty to the same charge and was given a suspended sentence earlier this year. Neither man has any previous convictions.

This weekend sees the opening of a new gallery in Greenock. It’s called The Wyllieum, and celebrates our local hero, the unique and beloved Scottish sculptor George Wyllie. Wyllie was the local customs officer. With no formal training, at 59 he decided to 'make a go' of art. Gregarious, exuberant, he launched himself onto an unsuspecting artworld with formidable energy, a huge beaming smile - and an ability to question everything. I've been writing about George for 45 years.

It’s part of the global heritage for 20th century architecture. There’s no building in Britain to match Glasgow School of Art. It’s a great, great work.” This accolade honoured GSA's centenary. In 2014 the iconic masterpiece became a semi-burnt-out shell; four years later a pile of dust.
