There are countless examples throughout history of the unifying power of mutual hardship. While suffering certainly has the power to feed polarization, moments of struggle can also build communities dedicated to supporting each other through unique challenges. This phenomenon of newfound connection galvanized by a shared struggle has begun to manifest at Carleton as students process a strange new normal: it gets dark really early these days.

By the end of New Student Week, it was clear to me that Carleton has an accessibility issue. I don’t expect to be able to enter every interest house, but it feels pretty obvious that required events shouldn’t be held in Eugster House when there is no way to get in without using stairs. I have a genetic condition that makes walking difficult and often painful; I particularly struggle with stairs. These days, I mostly manage fine. I use a cane and walk up ramps when I can.

WE AT FRIENDS of the Earth welcome the incremental increases in climate investment announced in Budget 2025, but we are deeply frustrated by the Government’s failure to implement the innovative measures needed to make the climate transition truly fair and inclusive. One of the most glaring missed opportunities is the decision to allocate €500 million to untargeted universal energy credits, money that could have been targeted to those most in need this winter.

College President Alison Byerly shared a draft of a proposed new Framework for Sustainability, Climate Action, and Environmental Justice with the school community on September 19. The document marks a departure from the most recent communication on the college’s sustainability plan in 2023, and outlines Carleton’s changed priorities while reaffirming some long-term goals. Most notably, with the proposed framework, Carleton would no longer aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025.
