The parents of a 40-year-old man who died due to complications related to anesthesia administration during a dental implant placement are seeking changes to state law to make procedures safer, according to a story published June 16 on Arizona ABC15. Bill and Brenda Swanson, the parents of Derek Swanson, who died after undergoing a procedure by Dr. Derek Lamb at Scottsdale Facial and Oral Surgery in Arizona, wants the law changed, requiring two providers during procedures.

The Iowa Board of Medicine has suspended the license of a Centerville physician accused of sexual misconduct involving a patient. According to the board, Dr. Joshwa Tromblee “exchanged inappropriate messages” with a female patient he first saw at MercyOne’s Centerville Medical Center on Sept. 24, 2021. Tromblee was a family-medicine physician at that time. Tromblee saw the patient again on Aug. 8, 2022, and April 3, 2023.

According to state records, the facility has been fined $2,750 due to the staff being unable to demonstrate the skills and techniques necessary to manage residents’ behavior, and failing to provide residents with nursing services required to meet their needs.

The incident occurred in January at Community NeuroRehab’s Glen Oaks facility in Coralville, a state-licensed, five-bed residential care facility for people with mental or developmental disabilities.

The latest analysis of federal data on nursing home staffing shows the overwhelming majority of nursing homes in Iowa and the United States are operating with less than the recommended staff to meet residents’ needs. With regard to their total nursing staff, eight of Iowa’s 410 nursing homes were staffed at least 40% below the level that was expected, based on residents’ acuity levels, during the fourth quarter of 2024.
