The global burden of cancer is immense, it is increasing, and it afflicts low-income and middle-income countries more severely than high-income countries. In some countries, total national expenditure on health has fallen in real terms, reducing the capacity to manage the backlogs in patient care that arose during the COVID-19 pandemic.
