I started my Substack journey last May. Almost a year ago. Unlike others, I actually started from zero. I didn’t have an email list, a social media following, or a network I could tap into. I built everything from scratch and only on Substack. To this day, it’s the only platform I use and it has truly become my online home. After being here every single day for nearly a year, I’ve learned a lot.

Substack can be really overwhelming. I know that firsthand. I signed up over a year ago, but I didn’t get the hang of it and ended up quitting. A couple of weeks later, I had a moment where I refused to be defeated so easily, so I gave it another shot. Thank goodness I did. Coming from a traditional blogging platform, I had a hard time adjusting. How do you get subscribers? How do people find you? What are Notes? Posts? How are they different from a newsletter?

It's so weird because I kept writing about things I know my audience appreciates - how to set up your Substack, how to write and do marketing, how to earn with your words... all the things they signed up for in the first place. "Substack is like a self-therapy platform for writers.”That was the first note I read when I just joined Substack. And you know what? I totally felt the same way in the beginning. Actually, I still do. There's something really therapeutic about putting your thoughts out there. Substack lets you build your name as a writer by just being yourself - showing up, being real, and connecting with people.
