Library books are like zeitgeist barometers. If multiple copies are checked out, the subject intrigues us; if there’s a waiting list, people are obsessed. “How to Be Old,” a memoir published earlier this year by Lyn Slater, falls into the latter category. When I went to borrow the book at my local library, I discovered that all 12 copies (print, audiobook, e-book, and Kindle) were checked out and the waiting list was 29 readers long. We all want to know how to be old.
