Roots-based travel is a fascinating way to see the world and learn more about yourself. It’s been one of the main motivations for many of my travels in recent years. I’d always had a rough idea of my heritage, but not much in the way of extensive family trees. What information I did have, sadly, showed that my connections were all rather distant. Much too distant to take advantage of ancestry-based dual citizenship offers – every travel writer’s dream! Oh well, you can’t win ‘em all.

All you fishy fanatics better cut me a break on this one. I’ll come right out and say it – I hate seafood. I rarely had opportunities to try great-quality seafood growing up in a landlocked state. However, whenever I did branch out and give it a go in Arizona, I always ended up disgusted and disappointed. Something about that fishy smell and rubbery texture gives me immediate nausea.

In my experience, “bad” weather makes traveling more interesting and adventurous. Or, maybe there is no bad weather. Okay, hurricanes and tornados are bad, no matter how you slice it, but rain, fog, and light wind get an unfair rap. Of course, I’m from Alaska and grew up with that kind of weather. So, it could be that I’ve developed a taste for rain and fog, or maybe it’s just my “artistic” side. In any case, I think that bad weather opens up more insights about a place than good weather does.
