SEMO introduces new women’s basketball coach Briley Palmer

The Southeast Missouri State Redhawks welcomed Briley Palmer as the ninth women’s basketball head coach in program history with an introductory press conference on Thursday morning at the Show Me Center. Brady Barke, SEMO vice president for intercollegiate athletics, opened the press conference detailing the process that took 12 days from posting the position to hiring Palmer.

The Southeast Missourian learned on Friday that longtime Cape Central Tigers head coach Drew Church is resigning following a 19-9 season in 2023-24. While Church resigns from his role as head basketball coach, he will remain as assistant principal. Church began his tenure as head coach of the Tigers back in 2006 and racked up 341 wins during his career. Church was hired in July of 2006 by then-athletic director Mark Ruark, who now serves as principal at Saxony Lutheran High School.
C4D1: Doniphan’s second half propels them to win over Dexter

The first semifinal of the evening featured a showdown between the top-seeded Doniphan Donettes and the fourth-seed Dexter Bearcats. In the end, a 17-2 run in the third-quarter led Doniphan to a 58-38 win over Dexter to earn a spot in the C4D1 championship game. “I’m really proud,” Doniphan coach Adam Epps said.

Senior night always serves as one last chance for the senior class to make a memory at home. The Cape Central Tigers did just that as they downed the Kennett Indians 93-53 on Friday at Cape Central High School. “It took us a little bit to get going,” Tigers coach Drew Church said. “In the first half, I didn’t think we guarded very well.
Close games are proving vital for Notre Dame Bulldogs

In the first 21 games, the Notre Dame Bulldogs have played in their fair share of close games. On Monday night, it appeared the Bulldogs would find themselves in yet another tight contest, but a big second half led them to a 66-39 win over the Dexter Bearcats at Notre Dame Regional High School. The Bulldogs led just 22-16 at halftime after beginning the game on a 10-0 run. Bulldogs coach Kirk Boeller said the dominant second half was predicated on their defense.

The NBA Dunk Contest isn’t for two more weeks, but the Cape Central Tigers put on one of their own on Friday night at Cape Central High School. Cape Central soared to a 90-63 win over the Caruthersville Tigers behind thunderous dunks all night long. “(The dunks) hype the team up,” Cape Central’s Marquel Murray said.
Redhawks to welcome rival Lindenwood to town on Thursday

The Southeast Missouri State Redhawks are set to host the Lindenwood Lions at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Show Me Center. Losers of three of their last five, the Redhawks will look to get to 2-2 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Last time out, the Redhawks downed Bethel 71-61, and while it wasn’t easy, a win is a win no matter how it came. “We came out slow today,” SEMO guard Evan Eursher said.
Mules outlast Tigers in overtime to pick up first win

It was a rollercoaster of emotions for all involved on Friday night as the Cape Central Tigers and Poplar Bluff Mules battled in their SEMO Conference opener. In the end, it was the Mules walking away victorious with a 42-35 overtime finish over the Tigers. “Cape is a damn good team,” Mules coach Dave Sievers said. “The way our season started, we needed this one.”Beforehand, if you told anyone in attendance that the game would've gone into overtime, they may not have believed you.
Boyd’s big week building confidence as week two approaches

Maybe one of the best performances of week one came at Cape Central High School last Friday night. Just minutes into the Tigers’ contest with St. Charles, sophomore running back KeyShawn Boyd broke free for a 55-yard touchdown run. That touchdown run would be the first of four Boyd would tally on Friday. “I have to give props to my offensive line,” Boyd said.

A pair of first-half goals was all the Notre Dame Bulldogs needed in their 2-1 win over the Perryville Pirates on Tuesday at Notre Dame Regional High School. After a furious start by the Pirates, the Bulldogs were able to weather the storm. “I think sometimes we are a little slow to get started,” Bulldogs coach Matt Vollink said.
