However, the surge in collections did not last. Annual inflation-adjusted state tax revenue fell in fiscal year 2023 from the prior year—the only time in at least 40 years that real revenue has declined outside of a recession. More than three dozen states saw their revenue shrink, including a steep decline in California; in fiscal 2024, at least five states reported shortfalls.

I’m a proud North Dakotan and one of the state’s leading cheerleaders, but like Steinbeck, I have a confession to make. Not only do I love Montana more than any other state (and that includes Colorado, California, Utah, and Wyoming), but when people ask me about my love of the West, I invariably say, “If there were only one state, it would have to be Montana.”(Many thanks to Donna W.

Growth in Asian, Black and Hispanic communities is transforming cities and suburban counties, especially in red states such as Florida, Indiana and Texas, according to a new Stateline analysis. Gulliver's Travels is often regarded as a children's book, but only by people who have never read it. According to our guest today, @ClayJenkinson, Gulliver's Travels is a work of #genius, a critique of the #optimism of the Enlightenment. https://t.co/4DwAChZukF #smithsonian https://t.co/zCUSaXPR8t
