A powerful geomagnetic storm is currently hitting Earth's atmosphere and this may lead to aurora displays - also known as the northern lights - as far south as Pennsylvania tonight. The northern lights are caused by intense explosions of plasma and magnetic particles coming from the surface of the sun which expand as they get closer to Earth and reach the upper atmosphere. The interaction of these particles with the gases in Earth's atmosphere results in the beautiful displays of light in the sky.
