The success across the fields and tracks was another reminder that the programs and athletes rank among the state’s best. Lancaster junior pitcher Alyssa Brunner led the Legends to the school’s first-ever team state championship. On Saturday, the team defeated Section VIII’s Massapequa 4-2 at Greenlight Networks Grand Slam Park in Binghamton. Brunner started each playoff game. 1. You’re a state champion in the highest classification. What have the last few days been like? The last few days for me have honestly been a whirlwind of emotions and events. From the last pitch I threw, the celebrations immediately started.

The senior softball captains for Orchard Park weren’t just confident they’d become state champions, they were certain of it. So sure of it, in fact, as our interview for a May 7 story was winding down, they delivered a directive: Make sure you talk to us after we’re champions. At the time, I chalked it up to two leaders having the utmost belief in their team, and why not?

MIDDLETOWN − From the start of the year, Lillie Bogdan's goal was to end her high school career on a high note. The Frontier senior and Georgetown signee didn’t outright state the goal. Still, it was clear that repeating as the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s state and Federation steeplechase champion was on her mind because she set the bar so high. Middletown High School hosted the final race of her career on Saturday, and Bogdan had a dominant showing.

MIDDLETOWN − Sweet Home senior Brenton Baker has won state championships before, and he wanted his teammates to feel what he felt. He is a two-time New York State Public High School Athletic Association indoor track and field high jump champion, but Baker had a bigger purpose in his last high school meet, the outdoor state meet.
