Numbers are everywhere in Washington. Budgets, deficits, statistical studies, probability analysis, trade figures, and so on. Sometimes, numbers are being used opaquely, to obscure what’s really going on. It’s an occupational hazard if you work in public policy in Washington, D.C.Other times, however, the numbers tell a story that is so obvious it’s downright funny.

Earlier this month, Iran’s most well-known foreign proxy, Lebanon’s Hezbollah, launched numerous rockets at Israel, making international headlines. It is seen as part of Iran’s expected response to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh on its own soil, which Iran blamed, or credited, depending on your point of view, on Israel. Yet Hezbollah launching rockets at Israel is not new. It’s been continuous starting almost immediately after Hamas’s assault on Oct. 7, 2023.

Essa is perhaps the foremost voice decrying close relations between India and Israel. He deems them twin purveyors of "settler-colonialism, occupation and apartheid."Indeed, Hostile Homelands is just Essa's latest effort. Since 2021, he ran a Substack newsletter titled "Militarists and Vegetarians" that critiques the India-Israel relationship. The horrific acts of terrorism that emerged from Gaza on October 7 are without recent precedent. The atrocities are being described by Israelis as the worst since the Holocaust. Such acts of savagery call for reevaluating our existing alliances and relationships and reorienting our diplomacy. The sad truth of the matter is that two formal U.S. allies, Turkey and Qatar, are, apart from Iran, the most important state sponsors of Hamas in the world.

In the tumultuous wake of an unprecedented attack on Israel by Hamas forces from Gaza, a defining moment has arisen for United States foreign policy. As a longstanding ally of Israel, the U.S. is compelled to reevaluate its stance and actions amidst a conflict steeped in complexity and historical precedent. The escalation of violence prompts the consideration of stringent policy measures aimed at curbing the Islamist organization’s aggression and restoring stability in the region.

Last year, a civilian court in Israel convicted and sentenced Mohammad El Halabi, a former employee of the large evangelical aid organisation World Vision, of diverting funds to the terrorist group Hamas. World Vision has stood by its man, and the scant coverage of the episode largely followed the organisation’s talking points – criticising the Israeli court system for excessive secrecy and uncritically mentioning outside audits supposedly exonerating World Vision.
