Bird flu cases continue to spread in Darke and Mercer counties

DARKE-MERCER COUNTIES – According to new reports, nearly four million more cases of High Path Avian Influenza (bird flu) have been confirmed to have affected 3.7 commercial chickens and over 86,000 in both Darke and Mercer counties. The confirmed diseased poultry came from a National Veterinary Services Laboratory in 10 reports on Jan. 23 and Jan. 24, according to the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA).

UNION CITY, Ind. – The Union City football program will have a familiar face calling the shots this season. Kyler Purdin, a 2018 UC graduate, has taken over the Indians as the new varsity head coach for the team. Purdin is definitely no stranger to UC football, having started his career as a ball boy in second grade and has been a part of the program ever since. Coach Purdin took over after former Head Coach Keith Maloy stepped into his new position as Union City’s Athletic Director.

UC baseball makes history with first Regional victory

UNION CITY, Ind. – The Union City baseball team made history on June 1 after winning the program’s first IHSAA Regional Title. The Indians defeated Wes-Del by a score of 7-6 in the Regional match-up at Logansport, Ind. The team will now battle Lafayette Central Catholic in the Semi-State game at 2 pm tomorrow (June 8) at La Porte High School. If they win they will face the winner of Morgan Township vs Freemont for a chance to advance to a State Finals game.
Ohio ties all-time state record for tornados

OHIO – After a tornado touched down on Wednesday in East Central Ohio, the state officially tied for the all-time record of tornado touchdowns in a single season. According to WHIO Weather Specialist Nick Dunn, Ohio currently sits at 62 total tornados for the 2024 season so far. The last time the state has seen this many twisters was set back in 1992. With the severe weather season not over yet, most Ohioans are not wanting to set a new record in this category.
Greenville Police Chief Eric Roberts calls it quits

GREENVILLE – Greenville Police Department (GPD) Chief Eric Roberts will officially retire on June 30. Chief Roberts started at the GPD on April 22, 1996. He served as a patrol officer until 2002 when he was promoted to detective, where he worked until being upgraded to Lieutenant in 2017. Roberts became Chief of the Greenville Police Department on Jan. 6, 2021. “Hard decision to make, but have been discussing retirement for some time,” Chief Roberts said.
Cincinnati Reds give Garno family the royal treatment

CINCINNATI – After learning about young Karson Garno’s story and his drive to play the sport he loves, the Cincinnati Reds invited Karson and his family to Great American Ballpark on Tuesday for the royal treatment. The Garno family got to tour a stadium and dugouts… and were on the field with the players in the VIP area watching the Reds practice. They also were given tickets to watch the Reds take on the St. Louis Cardinals.

GREENVILLE – After living a life of drug and alcohol abuse, 44-year-old Erik Straub now faces the physical consequences of his former addictions. Erik is a lifelong resident of Greenville and as of March 15, he has been sober from any drugs for nine years and has not had any alcohol for over three years. Though he has left his old life behind, he is now facing a life-threatening liver disease and cancer and desperately needs a liver transplant.
