Several generations of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class have graced European roads since 1979, but the 2002-2004 model years of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class were the first to be offered for sale in the USA in G500 and G55 AMG guises. Many updates over the years finally culminated in a redesigned G-Class for the modern era, all-new for 2019, though it looked almost exactly like the old one, since that style had become iconic.

Over eight generations, the Nissan Maxima has always fulfilled the role of the brand’s big sedan in the US, earning the distinction of never being powered by anything else than naturally aspirated six-cylinder engines for more than 30 years. The first of the Maxima generations was the only RWD one and was even offered with an inline six-cylinder diesel engine. Successive generations of the Maxima were all FWD.

The first of the GMC Sierra 2500 HD generations was introduced for 2001 as GMC’s line of heavier-duty trucks based on the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. They were positioned above the regular Sierra 1500, but without the towing ability of the even more capable Sierra 3500HD.

The first of the Lexus LX generations was launched in the US in 1995 as a premium full-size body-on-frame SUV based on the J80 Toyota Land Cruiser. It was only a light restyle of that car, and the second-generation J100 received more individualistic Lexus styling, boasting the then-typical quad Lexus headlights also seen on cars such as the GS. Over the years, every redesign of the Lexus LX was more its own car and less obviously a Toyota.

The BMW 7 Series has always been the Bavarian automaker’s flagship full-size sedan, showcasing the latest technologies, in a similar vein to its arch rival, the Mercedes S-Class. Called the 7 Series since the ’70s E23, there were another six BMW 7 Series generations after that, bringing us to the present day. Highlights along the way include the controversially styled E65 that held the distinction of being the first car in the world with a six-speed automatic transmission.
