    BRIDGEWATER — It started with Daniel Hernandez heading to local soccer fields each Sunday, watching his dad playing in local Spanish leagues around Harrisonburg. “I would go and be like, ‘Oh, my dad plays. I want to play, too,’” Hernandez said. But after a few years of spending the start of each week on the pitch with his dad, his parents went through a divorce and his time around the game was quickly taken away from him.

    Spotswood remained unbeaten in Valley District play with a 9-0 sweep of rival Turner Ashby on Tuesday in Bridgewater. The Trailblazers have now won eight of their last nine overall. Spotswood’s Ella Li and Emerson Knight both impressed, cruising to 8-0 victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches while also joining forces for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles.

    It wasn’t until late in the second half when Turner Ashby broke through. But when they did, the Knights did so in a big way. TA scored three goals in 10 minutes late in the game to break open a scoreless tie and down Spotswood 3-0 in Valley District action at Sam Ritchie Stadium in Bridgewater on Tuesday. Sophomore forward Evelyn Mejia Feregrino connected off an assist from Sofia Garber in the 66th minute to give the Knights the first score of the contest.

    Rocktown won its seventh straight with a 10-2 rout of Valley District opponent East Rockingham in Harrisonburg on Tuesday. Sophomore standout William Diaz Aceituno led the way for the Raptors with four goals in the lopsided victory. Joshua Osei Iraheta and Antony Pereira Machado both finished with two goals for Rocktown. Also chipping in for the Raptors were Joshua Urbina Jimenez and James Madison signee Tyler Miller with one goal apiece.

    Broadway stayed red hot, finishing with 18 hits and earning its 12th win in 13 games in a 24-5 six-inning blowout of Valley District opponent Harrisonburg on the road on Tuesday. The Gobblers led 13-0 through 4 1/2 innings and after the Blue Streaks scored five runs in the bottom half of the fifth, the visitors erupted for 11 runs in the ensuing frame to finish off the win. Madalyn Wolfe finished with a team-high three hits, including a double, a home run and three RBIs for Broadway.
