In addition to the potential federal funding cuts that public broadcasters across the country are facing, PBS North Carolina could also lose a big chunk of its state funding this year. The Senate budget would slash $4 million of the roughly $10 million the TV network receives from the state. The House budget, meanwhile, doesn’t directly target PBS NC for cuts, but it does include a $61 million cut to the UNC System, which includes the network.

Sen. Dan Blue, D-Wake, is the only state lawmaker who’s been in office since the early 1980s, but the former House speaker is no longer serving as Senate minority leader after his fellow Democrats backed Sen. Sydney Batch for that role instead. Blue says he’ll still have a key role in Senate action, and he's "freed up to play diplomat" on issues like healthcare, education and affordable housing.

The state House is moving forward with new regulations for kratom. Lawmakers say the tropical plant with drug-like effects shouldn't be available to people under age 21. The bill would also ban sales of synthetic forms of kratom that have higher concentrations of the active ingredient. Kratom retailers would be licensed, and selling the products to anyone under age 21 would result in fines and criminal charges.

The state Senate is expected to vote this week on new regulations for child care facilities. The legislation is the latest effort to address a shortage of child care by making it easier to operate and staff facilities. It would allow infant classrooms to have a maximum of 15 children, up from 10 under current regulations.

"Stein left Friday morning's event without taking any questions, either about the bills he signed or the bills awaiting action." Unusual for a governor to invite reporters to an 8 a.m. bill signing and then refuse to take questions from them https://t.co/rNgySuwtaf #ncpol #ncga
