(Image: PA) THE turf flat season may have faded away rather tamely at Doncaster on Saturday, but it proved an excellent final day for Ryedale yards. They won four of the eight races, most notably the mile-a-quarter Listed Virgin Bet-sponsored Gillies Fillies Stakes which went to the David O’Meara-trained Estrange, who was partnered by James Doyle.

(Image: PA) LOCAL trainer Brian Ellison’s quest to win one of the world’s most iconic races, the Lexus Melbourne Cup, received a significant boost last week when his Onesmoothoperator was an easy winner of the Geelong Cup on his debut in Australia. The race was being used by Brian as a warm-up race to the main event, which takes place at Flemington on Tuesday, November 5.

With a fine sense of timing on the eve of Yorkshire’s biggest meeting, Richard Fahey has his string in great form. The Musley Bank trainer sent out five winners last week, his most notable success being in Saturday’s big race at Ripon, the William Hill Great St Wilfrid Handicap with Dare To Hope. In fact he didn’t just have the winner of the race, he also sent out the runner-up Ramazan.

HE has done it at last. There was delight all round on Saturday afternoon when Geordie-born but Norton-based trainer Brian Ellison finally achieved one of his lifetime ambitions by winning the historic Northumberland Plate. It has taken a while, but eight years after the agonizing defeat of another of his runners, Seamour, he finally achieved his goal when Onesmoothoperator, ridden by Connor Beasley, powered clear in the final furlong to take the £81,000 first prize by two-and-a-half lengths.
