    As soon as next week a new involuntary care mental health facility, Alouette Homes, will be accepting new patients in Maple Ridge. Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows MLA Lisa Beare, Josie Osborne, Minister of Health; Terry Yung, Minister of State for Community Safety and Integrated Services; and Dr. Daniel Vigo, B.C.’s chief scientific adviser for psychiatry, toxic drugs and concurrent disorders, were at the facility on Tuesday, June 3, to announce the opening of the 18 room facility.

    "None of us are equal, until all of us are equal" are the words painted at the main entrance to Maple Ridge Secondary School, along with an emblem symbolizing diversity and inclusion. However, within the last month, the emblem was vandalized, twice. So, as students and teachers came together to celebrate Pride at the school on Monday, June 2, these acts of nonacceptance were top of mind.

    A Ridge Meadows RCMP officer has been nominated for the BC Law Enforcement Torch Run Award. Officials in Pitt Meadows celebrated the nomination of Staff Sgt. Michelle Luca, who heads the city's Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment, at the city council meeting on Tuesday, May 27. The award is handed out annually by Special Olympics BC to a Law Enforcement Torch Run member who has demonstrated significant dedication to the cause and to Special Olympics BC. Staff Sgt.

    A Pitt Meadows walk in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada raised more than $5,000. Around 35 people took part in the 65th annual Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History that took place along the Pitt River Regional Greenway on Sunday, May 25. So far the group has raised $5,115 towards a $9,000 goal, but donations will still be accepted online until Thursday, July 31. Karen Bateson, organizer of the local walk, said she was thrilled with the turnout.

And it is an industry that students from across the school district had a brief introduction to as part of the Kids Design An Ad campaign for The Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows News.
