On Tuesday voters get their last chance to decide who will be the major party candidates for governor and state Assembly in a year in which a surprisingly large number of New Jerseyans already have shown interest in the races. As of end of day Wednesday, some 340,000 people already had voted by mail or in person. That’s already about 40% of the maximum many thought would vote in this primary.

This year’s field of six Democrats and five Republicans gives voters options in the gubernatorial primaries. But it can be hard to find the differences among the candidates on some issues. State budget and tax policy, a major component of affordability, is one area where candidates have presented different plans. NJ Spotlight News pulled together candidate positions, looking especially to highlight the differences, ahead of the June 10 primary election.

Affordable New Jersey is an independent political organization, not required by state law to report any financial activity until 11 days before the June 10 primary. Both the Democratic and Republican parties have contested primaries to get on the general election ballot for the four-year term. New Jersey’s voter rolls lean Democratic: More than 38% of all registrants are Democrats, compared with almost 24% who are Republicans. Most of the rest are not affiliated with any party.

371K have voted early so far in NJ. 11% of registered Dems have cast ballots, 6+% of GOP. We could see a turnout much higher than expected. Who that would benefit is a very good question.
