With all due respect to the latest from Taylor Swift, classical music has long been the home of many a tortured poet. In the middle ages troubadours and trouveres toured their own tortured songs all over Europe. Opera heroes like Orfeo and Rodolfo were themselves artists with words (and music) having quite the angst-filled time. In the Romantic era composers set famously devastating poems by Heinrich Heine, Friedrich Rückert, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and Elizabeth Barret Browning.

With the 150th Kentucky Derby coming this Saturday, WUOL is going to celebrate with three hours of music from the year of the first run for the roses. Tune in at 9am on Derby Day for musical works that premiered in 1875, including Bizet's opera , Grieg's incidental music for and more. Pianist David Korevaar visited Italy to investigate the pocket-sized manuscript of the Piano Trio by composer Luigi Perrachio, turning it into a performance-ready piece of sheet music.
