Fairfax County Public Schools officials had foxes on the playground of Bucknell Elementary School trapped and killed, earning the ire of some community members who are expressing disapproval of the decision. Around 5 a.m. on March 7, Bucknell Heights resident Lisa Falleroni was walking her dogs through the neighborhood when a friend informed her of a fox trapped near a fence on the school playground. “As soon as he said it, I felt my heart literally fall into my stomach,” said Falleroni.

The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority’s (NVTA) Six-Year Program for fiscal years 2024 through 2029 will soon complete its evaluation period in preparation for public comment. Within NVTA’s $947.1 million budget for the region, $587.2 million would be invested into Fairfax County infrastructure to address four intersections of concern and promote greater walkability along some of the county’s busier roads.

Fairfax County taxpayers may have to open their wallets a little wider under the proposal for the first real estate tax hike in six years. On average, homeowners would pay $524 more. The proposed hike comes on the heels of a 2.86% increase in assessments, in which some residents have already seen their annual tax bill increase.

Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Michelle Reid proposed an increased FCPS budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 during a School Board meeting on Feb. 8. The proposal would increase the schools’ budget by $301.8 million, totaling $3.8 billion. Some of the superintendent’s goals with this budget increase are to preserve existing class sizes, attract and retain quality educators, strengthen investments in athletics and performing arts, and adopt environmentally friendly initiatives.
