Fairfax County Public Schools officials had foxes on the playground of Bucknell Elementary School trapped and killed, earning the ire of some community members who are expressing disapproval of the decision. Around 5 a.m. on March 7, Bucknell Heights resident Lisa Falleroni was walking her dogs through the neighborhood when a friend informed her of a fox trapped near a fence on the school playground. “As soon as he said it, I felt my heart literally fall into my stomach,” said Falleroni.

The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority’s (NVTA) Six-Year Program for fiscal years 2024 through 2029 will soon complete its evaluation period in preparation for public comment. Within NVTA’s $947.1 million budget for the region, $587.2 million would be invested into Fairfax County infrastructure to address four intersections of concern and promote greater walkability along some of the county’s busier roads.

Fairfax County taxpayers may have to open their wallets a little wider under the proposal for the first real estate tax hike in six years. On average, homeowners would pay $524 more. The proposed hike comes on the heels of a 2.86% increase in assessments, in which some residents have already seen their annual tax bill increase.

Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Michelle Reid proposed an increased FCPS budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 during a School Board meeting on Feb. 8. The proposal would increase the schools’ budget by $301.8 million, totaling $3.8 billion. Some of the superintendent’s goals with this budget increase are to preserve existing class sizes, attract and retain quality educators, strengthen investments in athletics and performing arts, and adopt environmentally friendly initiatives.

While Virginia’s House of Delegates members voted in favor of a bill supporting Monumental Sports’ effort to move the Capitols and Wizards to Potomac Yard, Virginia Democratic senators introduced a reenactment clause to stall the Senate bill. In a Feb. 10 Tweet, Senator Louise Lucas (D-Portsmouth) stated that the Senate’s arena bill would not be included on the Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee’s docket.

State Senator Jennifer Boysko (D-Herndon) joined four other representatives at McLean High School on Feb. 3 to hold a public hearing opposing Senator Dave Marsden’s (D-Burke) casino bill, SB 675. The bill would allow real estate developer Comstock Holding Companies to construct a casino in a county as large as Fairfax, with Tysons Corner as its most likely location.

State Senator David Marsden’s attempt to relax gambling restrictions in large counties continues to move through senate subcommittees. In contrast, Fairfax County citizens’ organizations and some politicians remain staunchly opposed to a casino in Tysons Corner. Marsden first introduced Senate Bill 675 on Jan. 17, which would add Fairfax County to the list of Virginia localities eligible for a casino.

Concerned residents and members of local citizens associations voiced their concerns to the Board of Supervisors on Jan. 23 in the hopes of recommending changes to a 110-foot-tall data center proposed in Chantilly. The Board of Supervisors sided with the data center developer. The data center would be built on dense forest land south of Route 50 and less than 2,000 feet west of Stonecroft Boulevard. The Cub Run Stream Valley and the Pleasant Valley neighborhood parallel the proposed location.

Fairfax County locals were met with an icy surprise last week when the region received around 4 inches of snow overnight. As a result, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and offices were closed on Jan. 16, and many government workers also had the day off. The following day, FCPS called a two-hour delay. According to FCPS, student safety is paramount when deciding to open or close during inclement weather.
